About
On April 21, 2004, Mary Buckley, a Virginia Beach resident, went to the hospital for “routine” foot surgery. She never came out. Her heart stopped, and so did her breathing. Mary went without oxygen for 15-20 minutes. She suffered massive brain damage as a result of a global anoxic brain injury remaining in a persistent vegetative state until her passing in October 2006.
Her Husband Matt started the MBF in September, 2005. The original mission of the Foundation was to provide support and information to families during a difficult time. The Buckley Family faced gaps in service and information during their ordeal and wanted to help others in a similar situation. Over the past three years the Mary Buckley Foundation’s mission has evolved. Today the MBF proudly sponsors three new programs:
- The Clubhouse serving the Tidewater Area – Beacon House – supported by state general funds administered by the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services and private donations.
- The Eastern Shore Day Program - No Limits – supported by state general funds administered by the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services and private donations.
- The friendAble Social Club - funded through a grant from the Sentara Foundation.
No Limits and the Beacon House both serve adult survivors of brain injury, while the Social Club serves all disability groups.
